When a baby teases
Does it seem like your baby is pushing your buttons?

Sometimes it feels as if baby is doing things just to tease mom or dad. Perhaps your little one is touching the DVD player even though he knows he shouldn't be. Or maybe your baby is making a mess just because she knows she'll get attention.
Relax. This type of behavior is normal. Your baby is just testing his or her own feelings and emotions. He or she is also learning what to expect from mom and dad. Unfortunately, if parents and caregivers don't approach the situation carefully, it can be more difficult to modify this testy behavior at a later time.
Tips on addressing these situations include:
- Focus more on giving baby more attention when something is done right, rather than when something is done wrong.
- Keep baby safe. Babies are often tempted by potentially hazardous objects (mom's bracelet, remote control, outlets.)
- Replace "no's" with helpful language. Teaching baby phrases such as "this is hot" or "that tastes bad" is more useful than constant "no-ing."
Perhaps the best advice for parents is to be a helpful and understanding. After all, your baby is beginning the long process of learning.
