Drinking water is often a faucet away. But is that water safe for your baby to drink?
If your water source is from a private well, there is an increased chance your water contains some types of bacteria and high levels of nitrates. Needless to say, you'll want to avoid introducing your babe to bacteria. Nitrates are harmful as it reduces the oxygen carrying ability in a baby's blood. If a baby doesn't get enough oxygen, various parts of their bodies can turn a blueish color (like toenails, fingernails, eyelids and lips.) This is called Blue Baby syndrome.
If your water comes from a municipal water supply and the water pipes in your home are older, there is a chance your water may contain lead. If these conditions are met, you should check with your water supplier to get your water tested. Lead is toxic and poses health risks for babies and young children.
Bottled and filtered water present your safest alternatives. Your baby will thank you!
If you are using water to mix infant formula or to feed your baby, it's wise to investigate if it's safe.
